Many small business owners think that Workplace Agreements are for large corporations only, and simply put the issue in the “too hard” file or basket. Why? Because the issue can appear as far too complex and they simply haven’t got the time or energy to get involved in doing something about it.
If the business manager did have the time, energy and desire to do something about Workplace Agreements, the next concern is usually what it will cost.
The Australian Federal Government has introduced the Australian Workplace Agreement Template and Kit specifically designed for use by small business. The template and kit are the result of extensive national research and discussion with Area Consultative Committees, employer and employee focus groups, industry associations and the broad small business community.
Instead of having to comply with hundreds of pages of complex and outdated award provisions, the template provides employers and employees with a short, plain English agreement that is flexible, balanced and well suited to the needs of small business. It will help employers to avoid falling foul of workplace relations laws, particularly in relation to unfair dismissal.
The Kit provides answers to questions specifically directed at small business operations and their employees giving all the essential information required to create an Australian Workplace Agreement. Models for handling disputes and an anti-discrimination policy are also provided.
The booklet comes in a kit containing:
- Standard Workplace Agreement template
- Step-by-step guide to applying it
- Official application form with instructions
- 20-page information booklet for employees
